Water quality
The water quality of the reef is declining from land based run-offs and chemical run-offs from farming practices that end up in the waters of the Reef. The pollution blocks sunlight and smothers corals and seagrass beds. Fertiliser run-off can also fuel algal blooms which overtake coral and drive crown of thorn starfish outbreaks. You can help stop this by donating and we will help clean the waters and stop the run-offs.

Crown of Thorns starfish
In the past 40 years, three waves of crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks have had a major impact on the many reefs. Crown-of-thorns starfish are marine invertebrates that feed on coral. The main reason for the outbreaks has not been discovered yet but scientists say that it is because of the chemical run-offs or the increasing water acidity from climate change. These conditions help the starfish breed faster and overbreed.
Your donation will help our scientists research these killers and find out how to stop them.

Over fishing
Poor management of commercial, recreational and Indigenous fishing is increasing the threats to many of Queensland’s threatened species including dugongs, turtles and inshore dolphins. Fisheries management needs to be supported by investment into expanded data collection and compliance programs. Your donation can help get better fishing regulations and protect the precious species of the reef.
